Hema Malini Writes to CM Yogi, Seeks State Fair Status for Yam Dwitiya Mela (AINN)
Mathura: The demand to grant state fair status to Mathura’s historic Yam Dwitiya Mela has gained momentum once again. Taking up the long-standing demand of the people of Braj, Member of Parliament Hema Malini has written to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, urging him to declare the event a state fair ahead of the Yam Dwitiya festival scheduled for November 11. Her initiative has renewed hopes of the annual fair receiving official recognition from the state government.
In a letter sent to the Chief Minister on November 5, Hema Malini highlighted the religious, spiritual and mythological significance of Yam Dwitiya. She said Mathura has a centuries-old tradition of celebrating Bhai Dooj as Yam Dwitiya.
On this occasion, a large number of devotees from across India and abroad visit Mathura and take a holy dip in the Yamuna at Vishram Ghat. According to religious belief, taking a dip in the Yamuna together with one's brother or sister on Yam Dwitiya frees devotees from the punishment of Yamraj and the noose of death.
In her letter, the MP pointed out that despite the festival's immense religious significance and participation by lakhs of devotees, it has not yet been granted state fair status. She said the historic event is an important part of Mathura's religious identity and cultural heritage.
She urged the Chief Minister to take special steps to fulfil the long-pending demand.
Hema Malini also mentioned in her letter that the Mathura-Vrindavan Municipal Corporation had written to the Urban Development Department on May 22, seeking necessary action to grant state fair status to the Yam Dwitiya Mela.
However, no final decision has been taken so far. The MP has now urged the Chief Minister to declare the Yam Dwitiya Mela a state fair before the festival on November 11.
The people of Braj are now waiting for the state government's decision.
