Muzaffarnagar: A Muslim man was allegedly assaulted by a mob after he was caught with Hindu woman in the Zila Parishad Market in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar. A video surfaced online showing several people attacking a young man wearing a red T-shirt, while the woman accompanying him attempts to save him. Police arrived at the scene and rescued both of them and took them to the police station. The matter is being investigated.
The assault incident took place at Zila Parishad Market, where the Muslim man and Hindu woman were sitting at an eatery when members of a Hindu organisation confronted them.
Both are said to be residents of the Thana Bhawan area of Shamli. However, the police have not yet officially confirmed their identities or other facts.
Accoring to reports, the man and woman were sitting at a snack shop. Some group members questioned the youth about his identity after suspecting the two belonged to different communities. It is alleged that the young man initially told his name as Ashu Sharma, but later a dispute arose regarding his identity. Following this, a crowd gathered at the scene and the young man was assaulted.
In the viral video, the young woman is seen repeatedly trying to protect the young man from the crowd. It is alleged that she was also pushed and treated rudely during this time.
After receiving a call on Dial 112, Police reached the spot and rescued the two from the mob, later took them to the Civil Lines police station.
Police are currently questioning man and woman and investigating every aspect of the incident. Various claims are being made on social media regarding the incident, which have not yet been officially confirmed.
SP City Amrit Jain stated that upon receiving information via Dial-112, police immediately arrived at the scene. The victim was brought to the police station and medically examined. He added that after receiving written statements from both parties, legal action will be taken based on the available evidence. The police are conducting an impartial investigation into the entire matter, and strict legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty.
A man, identified as Prashant, who claimed to be associated with Bajrang Dal, denied the allegations of assault. He said he became suspicious of the young man's behavior, so he asked him for his name. The young man initially identified himself as Ashu Sharma, but later said he was Muslim.
Prashant claimeed he only conducted an inquiry and had no role in the mob violence. He added that he was the one who informed the police, and the police are now investigating the entire matter.
