'Shaken and Terrified': MBBS Fresher Beaten With Belt by Seniors at Dehradun Medical College (X)

Dehradun: Dehradun police and college officials are investigating a serious complaint from a first-year MBBS student at Doon Medical College.

What Happened at Doon Medical College?

The student alleges that two seniors took him off campus and hit him with a belt last week. The assault, he says, left him scared and shaken.

The young student filed a written complaint with the hostel warden on January 13, saying the incident happened a day earlier. In the document, he named seniors from the 2023 and 2024 batches as the accused. He said the attack didn’t stop outside the college, the seniors confronted him later inside the hostel too.

"I am scared of retribution, and this left me shaken," the student stated in his complaint.

How Is the College Responding?

College authorities have said they are taking the complaint seriously. An anti-ragging committee has been set up to investigate the matter. Statements from the complainant and the students he has accused have already been recorded. Officials have said they expect the inquiry to conclude soon and will decide on appropriate action once the facts are clear.

The principal of the college Dr Geeta Jain said that the institution has "zero tolerance" for ragging or any violence among students.

"Our anti-ragging committee is probing the complaint, and we will know more once the inquiry is completed. We expect the findings by next week. There is zero tolerance when it comes to ragging," she said.

Officials said that the probe will aim to determine whether this was a ragging case or a personal dispute. The student’s family has also been informed about the investigation.

How Serious Is the Issue?

Allegations of ragging and assault in the college are not new. In 2023, an intern doctor was suspended and fined after another student complained of being beaten, and several senior students were barred from classes in that case. In previous years too, authorities at the college took action against students over similar complaints.
