Are Smartphones Killing Romance? Study Links Screen Time to Falling Birth Rates (X)

New Delhi: A major problem is rapidly growing in many countries around the world. People are having fewer children than before. In many countries, the situation has become so severe that the population is gradually declining. A report revealed that smartphones and social media are playing a central role in the worldwide decline in birth rates.

What is the reason of decline?

Previously, it was believed that inflation, job pressures, smaller homes, and changing lifestyles were the main reasons for this decline. However, a research ahs now revealed a new and surprising angle. Scientists and researchers are trying to understand whether smartphones and social media are also contributing factors to the decline in birth rates.

Is social media changing lives?

According to a report by the Financial Times, in more than two-thirds of the world's countries, the birth rate has fallen below the level considered necessary to keep the population stable.

In many countries, people are no longer having enough children to replace the aging population. This problem already existed in countries like South Korea, Japan, China, Europe, and the United States, but this trend is now increasingly evident in many countries in  America, the Middle East, and Asia.

The report states that the sudden decline in birth rates over the past 10-15 years cannot be explained solely by economic factors. Researchers believe that smartphones and social media have changed the way people live their lives.

Are people socialising less?

Relationships are becoming more difficult to form, and loneliness is increasing. This is ultimately impacting marriage and children.

Where internet is fast, birth rate is slow?

A study examined data from the US and UK after the rollout of 4G internet networks. It found that birth rates fell more rapidly in areas where faster mobile internet arrived first. Researchers said that with the advent of smartphones, youngsters spent more time online and less time interacting face-to-face.

Experts said that a large part of dating, friendships, and relationships are now confined to screens. People are constantly watching the perfect lives of others on social media, which is changing expectations about relationships. Many people are avoiding long-term relationships. The number of young people living alone is also increasing.

What does the report say?

The Financial Times report also stated that previously, the birth rate declined because married couples had fewer children. But now, the biggest reason is the decline in relationships themselves. This means that a large number of people are not reaching marriage or long-term relationships.

However, experts don't blame smartphones alone. Expensive housing, job pressures, children's education costs, and fears about the future are also major factors. In many countries, young people are finding it difficult to secure permanent jobs and purchase homes. Consequently, they are postponing the decision to marry and have children.

Social media is also having an impact on mental health. Numerous reports suggest that constant screen time is increasing loneliness, stress, and depression. This is impacting people's social lives.

In some countries, governments are even providing financial assistance to stem this declining birth rate. Countries like Japan and South Korea are offering child support, tax breaks, and other programs. Despite this, the birth rate hasn't shown any significant improvement. Experts say that financial aid alone won't solve the problem, as the real change lies in people's lifestyles and social behavior.
