New Delhi: The way we approach home cleaning is about to change forever. In a groundbreaking move, Gatsby—an American robotics startup—recently deployed a fully autonomous humanoid robot to clean an apartment for an anonymous client in San Francisco, USA. The robot was booked via the company's iOS app and executed the entire task flawlessly.
According to reports, Gatsby CEO Aaron Frischberg states that domestic chores have historically been the most significant form of unpaid labor, consuming humans' precious time. This innovative technology was designed specifically to give people back their valuable time.
Gatsby has adopted a distinct business model for its robots. Unlike companies such as Tesla and 1X, they do not intend to sell their robots directly to consumers at a high price point—specifically, for over $20,000 (or more than ₹16 lakhs).
Instead of selling the hardware, the company has developed a rental service model akin to Uber. This approach eliminates the need for individuals to purchase an expensive robot outright. Users can simply book a humanoid robot for cleaning services through the app for a flat fee of $150 (approximately ₹12,500).
Gatsby has set a uniform rate of $150 for every apartment size in San Francisco. This strategy is posing stiff competition to traditional home cleaning agencies. Notably, standard home cleaning services in San Francisco typically range from $150 to $300. According to reports, the company chose home cleaning as its business focus because, since the invention of the broom and mop, there has been no major technological innovation in this sector. Winning the 'Robot War' Through Software—Without Building a Robot of Its Own
Currently, the entire robotics industry is investing billions of dollars in the quest to create the perfect mechanical body. Amidst this landscape, Gatsby—launched in January 2026—opted for a smarter approach. The company is developing robust software, navigation systems, and user interfaces designed to function seamlessly with *any* robot. By doing so, the company can instantly integrate new robots into its operations as they enter the market, without having to alter its fundamental business model. Supported by NVIDIA, this service is witnessing rapidly growing demand and an expanding waiting list.
