WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption to scramble messages, voice calls, and video calls between you and the recipient. This makes sure that only you and the other person involved in the chat can access the content. Even WhatsApp itself can't see the contents of your messages. With end-to-end encrypted backup, you can add same layer to you iCloud and Google Account backups.

Let’s take a look how does it works: Encryption with a key: Imagine a padlock on your message. End-to-end encryption creates a unique key for each chat. This key is only available to your device and the recipient's device.

End-to-end encryption in Group chats: Each group has end-to-end encryption key, which allow messages to be encrypted and decrypted individually for each group member.

Securing messages before they leave: Your message is locked with the key on your device before it's sent. Only the recipient's device has the matching key to unlock and read it.

Automatic and always on: End-to-end encryption is enabled by default in WhatsApp. There is no special settings to use this service.

Benefits of end-to-end encryption: The inbuilt feature allows increased privacy for your communications and makes it harder for hackers to intercept your messages.

It is worth to be noted that end-to-end encryption applies to messages after they leave your device. WhatsApp can still access your metadata, like who you messaged and when. Backups on your phone or cloud storage might not be end-to-end encrypted by default. You can enable end-to-end encryption for backups if you want additional protection.
