Chennai: After securing its first-ever victory in the Assembly elections held in Tamil Nadu on April 23, the TVK has intensified its efforts to garner support for government formation. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its allies—including the Congress, the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], and the VCK—have extended their support to the TVK. The TVK achieved a historic victory in the elections by winning 108 seats, although it fell 10 seats short of the majority mark. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, the Congress holds five seats, while the other three parties have two legislators each.

According to sources, the VCK has pledged unconditional support to Vijay's TVK, thereby dispelling the uncertainty surrounding government formation that had faced the actor-politician. With the support of the VCK's two legislators, the TVK has reached the 'magic figure' of 118. The TVK chief, Vijay, is expected to meet with the Governor shortly. Earlier reports had suggested that this meeting would take place on Monday; however, amidst rapidly unfolding political developments, the Governor of Tamil Nadu has cancelled his scheduled flight to Kerala.

The path for the formation of a new government in Tamil Nadu has been cleared. The VCK, which holds two legislative seats, has announced its support for the Vijay-led TVK. On Saturday, VCK President Thol. Thirumavalavan handed over an official letter confirming this support to TVK General Secretary Adhav Arjun. With the VCK's backing, the total number of legislators supporting the TVK government has now reached 118. In the 234-member Legislative Assembly, the majority mark stands at 118. Despite the VCK's support, a delay in Vijay's swearing-in ceremony is anticipated, as the Governor is scheduled to travel to Kerala this evening.
