'I'm CM for Everyone': Suvendu Adhikari Stops 'Jai Shri Ram' Chants After Taking Oath (X)

Kolkata: Soon after being sworn in as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday delivered a strong message, by asking supporters to stop   chanting 'Jai Shri Ram' at Jorasanko Thakurbari, the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore, saying that as Chief Minister, he now belongs to everyone.

What happen during the event?

Immediately after the swearing-in ceremony at the Brigade Parade Ground, the Chief Minister headed straight to Jorasanko Thakurbari. There, he paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on his 166th birth anniversary.

While visiting the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore, Suvendu said that "Eta political kochkochir somoy na (this is not the time for political bickering)."

"There are huge responsibilities ahead. Those who want to do that (political bickering) may continue; we will move forward," he further added.

Why did Suvendu object 'Jai Shri Ram' slogans?

While the Chief Minister was speaking to the media at the Thakurbari complex, the crowd began chanting "Jai Shri Ram."

Chief Minister Suvendu immediately responded, telling his supporters to stop chanting, saying, "This is not the place to say 'Jai Shri Ram', here only 'Kabiguru'."

"I will not make any controversial remark. I am the chief minister. I belong to everyone now. Bengal has already suffered immense damage. Education and culture have been destroyed. Let us rebuild Bengal," he said.

Did Suvendu remember university days?

After paying homage at Thakurbari, CM Adhikari spent time with Rabindra Bharati University vice-chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee and other officials of the institution.

Suvendu holds a master's degree in Environmental Studies from the university. At the request of university officials, he interacted with the Vice Chancellor at Bichitra Bhavan and enjoyed snacks with black tea.
