Regional News: Hartalika Teej 2025 is considered the biggest festival of unbroken good fortune and marital happiness for married women. On this day, women keep a waterless fast and keep a vigil for Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati throughout the night. It is mentioned in the scriptures that the vigil done on the night of Teej with stories, bhajans, and worship gives the same results as a thousand years of penance. For this reason, it is especially important to follow the rules of night worship and vigil on Hartalika Teej.
According to mythological belief, Goddess Parvati performed rigorous penance in the Himalayas and obtained Lord Shiva as her husband. It is mentioned in Skanda Purana that fasting on this day gives unbroken good fortune to married women, and girls get suitable grooms.
On Hartalika Teej night, devotees light a lamp before the idol or picture of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, placing a Kalash nearby. Belpatra, Ganga water, Dhatura, and Bhaang are offered to Lord Shiva, while bangles, bindis, vermillion, and bracelets are dedicated to Goddess Parvati. Lighting a lamp throughout the night is considered mandatory, as extinguishing it is believed to bring inauspicious results.
According to the Skanda Purana and Padma Purana, staying awake through the night holds great spiritual merit. Women observing fasts sing stories and hymns of Shiva-Parvati, gaining fruits equal to penance. Reciting Shiv Chalisa and Parvati Stotra is considered auspicious, along with chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" and "Om Parvatyai Namah." Offering Belpatra and water to the Shivlinga at every prahar of the night fulfills desires and ensures divine blessings.
Shiv Purana states that staying awake on Hartalika Teej brings the virtue of a thousand years of penance. Padma Purana mentions that singing kirtans prevents poverty from entering the home. Remembering Shiva-Parvati strengthens love and stability in married life.
The fast is not merely a tradition but a sacred path to reinforce faith and harmony between husband and wife. Through night worship and devotion, one receives the blessings of Goddess Parvati for unbroken fortune and Lord Shiva’s boon of longevity.
