Pitru Paksha Day 7: Saptami Shraddha Today; Check Auspicious Timings for Pind Daan

Auspicious timings include the Kutupa Muhurat (11:52 AM–12:42 PM), Rauhina Muhurat (12:42 PM–1:31 PM) and Aparahna Kala (1:31 PM–4:00 PM). Rituals should be done with devotion and respect, facing south, using black sesame seeds, barley, kusha grass and water.

The seventh day of Pitru Paksha is being observed today across the country with devotion and rituals. Known as Saptami Shradh, this day is dedicated to performing Shradh​​​​​​​ and pind daan for ancestors who passed away on the seventh lunar day (Saptami Tithi) of either fortnight. Pitru Paksha, which began on 7 September, will continue till 21 September 2025, ending on Sarvapitru Amavasya. Priests have advised that today’s rituals, including tarpan and pind daan, be performed during the auspicious Kutupa and Rauhina muhurats before the afternoon period (Aparahna Kala).

Shradh​​​​​​​ Worship Timings

Saptami Shradh will be performed on Saturday, 13 September 2025.

Kutupa Muhurat: from 11:52 AM to 12:42 PM.

Total Duration – 50 minutes

Rauhina Muhurat: from 12:42 PM to 1:31 PM.

Total Duration – 50 minutes

Aparahna Kala: from 1:31 PM to 4:00 PM.

Total Duration – 2 hours 29 minutes

Worship Procedure for Pitru Paksha Shradh​​​​​​​ (Pujan Vidhi)

 

  • Perform the Shradh​​​​​​​ karma with full devotion, expressing faith, reverence, and respect toward your ancestors.
  • Wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear light-colored clothes.
  • Purify the place of worship by sprinkling Ganga jal (holy water of the Ganges) and light a lamp.
  • Spread a clean cloth on a low wooden seat (chauki) and mark it in the name of your ancestors.
  • Sit facing the south direction (which is considered the direction of the ancestors).
  • Offer tarpan to the ancestors using black sesame seeds, barley, kusha grass, and water.
  • Chant the mantra “Om Pitribhyaḥ Namah”.
  • Prepare pinda (rice balls) using rice, milk, and sesame seeds, and offer them to the ancestors (pind daan).
  • While pronouncing the name and gotra (lineage) of the ancestors, offer water, sesame seeds, and flowers.
