In Indian culture, bowing down to elders and touching their feet has always been a sign of respect. Especially in Hindu traditions, this practice is followed every day in homes and temples. Young people bend down to show humility and devotion. After that, elders bless them with goodwill and prayers. Many believe this blessing brings success and happiness in life. The tradition is very old and deeply connected to family values. Respect is considered the first step toward gaining wisdom.
However, some people think that when a younger person touches someone’s feet, the elder loses some of their own virtue or spiritual merit. They worry that their blessings reduce their store of good deeds. This confusion has been discussed among devotees many times. One such question was asked to Premanand Maharaj during a spiritual session. The devotee wanted to know whether elders should avoid giving blessings to protect their own virtue. Maharaj listened carefully to the doubt. Then he explained the truth in a very simple way.
Premanand Maharaj said that when a younger person touches your feet with respect, their faith reaches your heart. In return, you give them blessings with love and positive energy. This is not a loss but an exchange. Both sides gain more virtue because one shows devotion and the other shows kindness. It becomes a spiritual connection between two souls. Maharaj described it as “a transaction of goodness” where nobody loses anything. Instead, both rise higher in purity.
To make this idea easy to understand, Premanand Maharaj used a beautiful example. He said that when we add a bucket of water to a river, the river does not lose anything but only increases. In the same way, blessings never reduce a person’s virtue. By giving blessings, elders only gain more spiritual wealth. Virtue grows when it is shared with love. Kindness and humility are like seeds, which multiply when given away. Goodness can never become less.
Maharaj also warned that if an elder ever thinks, “Touching my feet will take away my virtue,” then that thought itself shows ego. According to him, ego is the true enemy of virtue. Pride can destroy all good deeds earned over years. Blessings flow only from a humble heart. The more a person bends with respect, the more divine grace they receive. Virtue always increases with humility.
He said clearly that this tradition is not about losing virtue but about growing it. When a person touches the feet of elders, God fills more virtue into the life of the elder. Those who refuse to give blessings close the doors of their own good fortune. When a disciple bows to their guru, the guru’s spiritual merit increases even more. Blessings spread happiness and remove negative energy. Sharing virtue is the real meaning of Indian spirituality.
The scriptures say that touching the feet of elders increases a person’s virtue one hundred times. It is a spiritual act that connects hearts with love and respect. Elders feel honored, and youngsters feel protected. This beautiful exchange has kept families united for generations. Blessings are like light — the more you share, the brighter it becomes. India’s culture teaches that virtue grows best when it is given freely. Touching feet keeps this divine circle alive forever.
