New Delhi: The new financial year 2027 has commenced with a shake-up in the country's electric four-wheeler segment. While Tata Motors once again topped the segment in April 2026, significant shifts were observed in the subsequent rankings. Notably, JSW MG Motor, which had held the number two position for several months, slipped to the third spot this time around. Meanwhile, Mahindra seized the second position, backed by impressive sales figures.

What move did VinFast make?

VinFast made a significant leap, climbing to the fourth position; in doing so, the company surpassed both Hyundai and Maruti. Meanwhile, Maruti entered the top five rankings with its e-Vitara model. This electric SUV crossed the 1,000-unit sales mark for the first time, thereby overtaking Hyundai. In contrast, Elon Musk's Tesla failed to make it into the top 10 list.

Regarding the top 10 electric four-wheeler manufacturers, Tata Motors sold 8,507 electric cars in April 2026. Mahindra Electric sold 5,395 electric cars in April 2026. JSW MG Motor sold 4,978 electric cars in April 2026. VinFast sold 1,231 electric cars in April 2026. Maruti Suzuki sold 1,223 electric cars in April 2026. Hyundai Motor sold 512 electric cars in April 2026.

BYD India sold 467 electric cars in April 2026. Kia India sold 341 electric cars in April 2026. BMW India sold 296 electric cars in April 2026. Mercedes-Benz sold 104 electric cars in April 2026. All other companies combined sold a total of 111 electric cars. In this manner, a total of 23,165 electric cars were sold in this segment.

Will BE 6 and XEV 9e Propel Mahindra to the Number 2 Spot?

By securing the number two position in the segment, Mahindra has ended MG Motor's dominance. Furthermore, it has sounded a warning bell for Tata Motors. Speaking of the features and specifications of these two electric SUVs, the company claims that the BE 6 EV—equipped with a 79kWh battery pack—can travel up to 682 km. However, in *Autocar India's* tests, this EV managed to deliver an average range of only 449 km. Meanwhile, the claimed range for the 59kWh variant stands at 535 km. In terms of charging, the BE 6 offers considerable flexibility; it can be fully charged in 6–8 hours using an AC charger (11kW). Additionally, using a DC fast charger (140/175kW), it can be charged from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes.

On the other hand, regarding the dimensions of the Mahindra XEV 9e, it measures 4789 mm in length, 1907 mm in width, 1694 mm in height, and features a wheelbase of 2775 mm. It boasts a ground clearance of 207 mm and a turning diameter of 10 meters. The tire size is 245/55 R19 (or 245/50 R20). It offers a boot space of 663 liters, complemented by a 150-liter 'frunk' (front trunk). It is equipped with a 59kWh battery pack and features a motor delivering 231 hp and 380 Nm of torque. It comes with a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) configuration. Its MIDC-certified range is 542 km. It can be charged in 20 minutes using a 140kW fast charger; alternatively, it takes 8.7 hours to charge using a 7.2kW charger and 6 hours using an 11kW charger. The XEV 9e 79kWh features a battery capacity of 79kWh. It is equipped with a motor producing 286hp and 380Nm of torque. It comes with a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) configuration. Its MIDC range is 656 km. It can be charged in 20 minutes using a 170kW fast charger.
