New Delhi: India's first mass-market electric scooter manufacturer, which dominated the market for a long time, has fallen from glory to ruin in the last two years. After holding the top spot for electric two-wheelers for several months, this Bengaluru-based company dropped out of the top 5 in February, with monthly sales falling to their lowest level in four years. What happened and what the data reveals? Let's explain in detail today.
Ola Electric launched its electric scooters, the S1 and S1 Pro, for the first time on August 15, 2021. At that time, there weren't many players in the electric two-wheeler segment, and the Bajaj Chetak had a limited presence. Ola Electric expanded its product portfolio and aggressive marketing to attract customers, and scooter sales skyrocketed. However, gradually, more companies began to enter the market.
In subsequent years, brands like Ather Energy, TVS Motor Company, Hero MotoCorp's Vida, and Greaves Electric's Ampere, along with River Mobility, Simple Energy, Pure Energy, and Kinetic, among others, began to corner Ola Electric. Today, TVS Electric holds the top spot in the two-wheeler segment. Bajaj Auto, followed by Ather Energy, Hero Vida, and Greaves Electric, are in a better position than Ola Electric.
The sales figures for Ola electric scooters are even more surprising. In 2022, despite limited production capacity and lower demand, Ola Electric sold 109,385 scooters. This was followed by 265,596 units in 2023, a peak of 407,523 units in 2024, and then a further decline to 198,561 units in 2025. You will be even more surprised to know that in February 2026, Ola Electric sold only 3,968 electric two-wheelers, down from 3,910 units in February 2022. Ola Electric sold fewer scooters than this four years ago. During these four years, the company sold a maximum of 53,646 electric scooters in March 2024. Almost every month in 2024 was a record-breaking month for Ola Electric.
Now you might be wondering why Ola Electric has fallen into such a predicament. Let me tell you that the success of any vehicle in India hinges on pillars like the availability of after-sales service and service center response. Ola expanded its sales network across the country, but didn't pay much attention to servicing conditions, resulting in a steady increase in customer complaints. Although Ola Electric consistently claims to have improved the situation, in a country like India where emotions and word of mouth are so valuable that they can make or break a situation in a single moment, Ola Electric has lost customer trust over time, and today, the once-number-one company has fallen to sixth place and is desperate for customers.
