The central government has announced new rules for old vehicles, making their registration more expensive. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has increased the re-registration fees for vehicles that are more than 15 years old. Now, owners will be able to renew registration for up to 20 years, but they will have to pay a much higher fee. The government says this move will discourage the use of very old and polluting vehicles, while still allowing vehicle owners a legal way to keep their cars on the road.
Under the new rules, the fees for different categories of vehicles have been fixed as follows:
According to the new rules, any vehicle can be registered for a maximum of 20 years from the date of its first registration. That means after completing 15 years, the vehicle owner will have to get it re-registered, but for that, they will have to pay a hefty fee.
These rules will apply across the country, but Delhi-NCR has been given an exemption. Strict restrictions are already in place here regarding old vehicles. The government believes that this step will help remove old and polluting vehicles from the roads, which will aid in pollution control and improve road safety.
