Business News: Over the past few days, several messages circulated online claiming that the new labour codes will remove workers’ rights to form trade unions and impose strict rules on strikes. Some posts also suggested that 90 percent of unorganised sector workers will not be covered under the new laws. Additionally, it was claimed the codes do not ensure minimum wages or social security benefits. These messages created widespread confusion among workers and unions, forcing the government to respond publicly.

What Did PIB Clarify?

The Press Information Bureau’s fact-check team posted that these claims are completely false. According to their statement, the labour codes do not end the right to form trade unions. Instead, they officially recognise unions as councils for negotiation. The suggestion that most workers are excluded has also been denied. The government confirmed that both organised and unorganised sector workers will come under the social security framework, including gig, platform and domestic workers.

Will Minimum Wage Apply To All Workers?

Under the new labour codes, minimum wage will apply to all workers across all sectors. A "National Floor Wage" has been set to ensure that no state can fix wages lower than a certain approved limit. This guarantees better income protection for workers. This element contradicts the viral claim that the laws do not provide minimum wage assurance. Authorities have confirmed that these provisions are meant to enhance worker welfare.

Are Strikes Being Restricted?

The rumours indicated that the new rules will make strikes nearly impossible. PIB clarified that no such blanket restrictions have been imposed. Although there are structured procedures for declaring strikes to maintain discipline, the fundamental right to stage labour strikes has not been removed. Workers and unions can still use legal channels for protest when required.

What About Social Security Benefits?

For the first time, the new framework brings not only organised workers but also unorganised labour, including gig and platform workers, under social security coverage. This means workers involved in app-based services, delivery systems and household work will also be eligible for benefits. This is a major expansion of protection, contrary to claims made online.

Will Trade Unions Lose Recognition?

No. The new codes give trade unions legal recognition as consultative bodies for negotiating with employers. The right to register and operate trade unions remains unchanged. Claims that unions will be disbanded or face restrictions are unfounded. Workers can continue their association activities without fear.

Is There Any Change In Work Hours?

The government has allowed flexibility for a four-day work week, where employees may work up to 12 hours per day. In return, they will get three paid holidays. This option is introduced to provide better work-life balance and has not replaced existing weekly work norms. It remains optional based on mutual agreement between workers and employers.
