New Delhi: The burden on the pockets of those driving CNG vehicles has increased again. CNG prices have been increased by Rs 2 per kg in Mumbai and surrounding areas. The new rates have come into effect from midnight on May 29, 2026. After this, CNG in Mumbai has increased from Rs 84 to Rs 86 per kg.
This increase will have a direct impact on lakhs of drivers, taxi drivers, auto-rickshaw drivers and commercial vehicles. The income of daily wage earners will decrease. Companies are citing rising costs and instability of the global energy market as the reasons.
Earlier on May 14 also, CNG had become costlier by Rs 2 in Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Then the rate was 82 to 84 rupees. Now after just 17 days it was increased again by Rs 2. That is, in the month of May itself, CNG became costlier by Rs 4 per kg.
Currently CNG in Delhi is Rs 83.09 per kg. Whereas in Mumbai the rate has reached Rs 86. Meaning, CNG has become costlier by about Rs 3 in Mumbai compared to Delhi.
CNG is Rs 91.70 per kg in Noida and Ghaziabad. This is more than Mumbai. In Delhi-NCR too, prices have been increased several times in the recent past.
Experts believe that due to CNG becoming expensive, the fares of auto-rickshaws and cabs may increase. Auto-taxi unions in many cities have already demanded increase in fares. Due to increase in fuel cost, freight transportation will also become expensive. Its effect can be seen on the prices of everyday goods. There is a fear of milk, vegetables, ration becoming expensive.
Experts say that there is pressure on natural gas prices due to the ongoing tension in the Middle East and uncertainty in the energy market. For this reason, CNG rates are being changed continuously in many cities of the country.
The continuously increasing price of CNG has increased the concern of the common people. There may be further changes in prices in the coming days depending on the situation in the global energy market. If tension increases, CNG may even cross Rs 90. At present, Mumbaikars have to pay Rs 4 more per kg.
