Sam Pitroda has opted to step down from his position as the chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, a move that has been accepted by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh made the announcement, stating that Pitroda's decision was voluntary. This development follows Pitroda's involvement in a major political controversy stemming from his racially insensitive remarks regarding the appearance of Indians from various regions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly criticized Pitroda for his statement during the ongoing Lok Sabha election.

What had Sam Pitroda said?

During an interview, Sam Pitroda discussed how the Congress party played a big role in maintaining unity among Indians over the past 75 years despite the country's vast diversity. While highlighting these differences, Pitroda remarked that individuals from the eastern region may resemble Chinese people, those from the western region may resemble Arabs, and those from the northern region might have fair complexions, while those from the southern region may resemble Africans. Despite these physical differences, Pitroda emphasized that all Indians are like brothers and sisters, and they respect the diversity of languages, religions, customs, and cuisines present within the country.

PM Modi lashes out on Sam

During his rallies in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Prime Minister Modi expressed his displeasure with the comments made by Rahul Gandhi's uncle, Sam, regarding the skin color of Indians. Prime Minister Modi referred to President Droupadi Murmu, emphasizing how the Congress opposed her presidential candidacy due to her dark skin, likening her to an African.

He questioned whether the Congress chief ministers of Telangana and Karnataka would agree with this comparison and whether Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin would sever ties with the Congress party.
