Turkey: The increasing tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan has increased the possibility of unrest in the region. The sourness that has been going on in relationships for a long time now seems to be turning into an open dispute. This is the reason why the meeting of top representatives of both countries in Turkey today is considered very important. Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif warned that the situation could lead to "war" if talks remain inconclusive. This statement in itself tells how serious the situation is.

Why did tension increase?

Pakistan claims that American drones are using Pakistani airspace to attack targets in Afghanistan. Both the government and the army of Pakistan are very angry on this matter. He says that despite filing protests several times, the situation has not changed. Pakistan is considering it against its sovereignty.

On the other hand, the Taliban government alleges that the Pakistani Army is trying to create pressure. At the same time, claims are coming out from within Pakistan that Army Chief Asim Munir is directly implementing the strategy and the civilian government is merely a facade.

Why did Turkey end up in the middle?

Turkey has been given the role of mediator in this matter because both the countries have better diplomatic relations with it. Turkey has tried many times in the past to resolve regional tensions. This is the reason why today's meeting is being considered as the last chance to resolve the situation through talks.

Is there really a threat of war?

Experts believe that the tension is not as diplomatic as before. Military movements have been recorded several times on the border. Pakistan alleges terrorist infiltration, and Afghanistan calls it baseless. If the talks fail, the border conflict could escalate, affecting the whole of South Asia.

If the talks are successful, what decisions can be taken?

  • Clear agreement regarding drone attacks
  • Joint Mechanism on Border Security
  • intelligence-sharing system
  • Announcement of reducing military tension

What will be the result?

The talks to be held today in Turkey will decide whether the two countries choose the path of dialogue or confrontation. The world is keeping an eye on this meeting because if the situation worsens, it will affect not just the two countries but the entire region.
