The killing of Inqilab Manch spokesperson Usman Farooq Hadi has sent shockwaves across Bangladesh. Authorities say this was not an isolated crime. It is being seen as a sign of rising political instability. Security agencies believe the murder was carefully planned. Soon after the incident, the government moved into emergency mode. Meetings were held at the highest levels. The focus quickly shifted to the safety of political leaders.
Police and intelligence agencies jointly prepared a list of 127 leaders facing possible threats. The list includes both national and district-level figures. Sources say leaders from almost all parties are included, except the ruling Awami League and Jatiya Party. Names from BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party feature prominently. Influential leaders from Dhaka and other districts are covered. The report has already been submitted to the government.
Officials say leaders linked to last year’s July movement are considered most vulnerable. The report explains why each leader requires protection. Public visibility and political activity are key risk factors. Some leaders have been placed under a high-risk category. Security agencies are conducting individual threat assessments. Protection measures are being decided case by case.
The government has gone beyond police protection. Leaders under threat are also being allowed to carry licensed weapons. So far, 73 leaders have applied for arms licences. Permission has already been granted to 20 of them. Several senior leaders have been given personal security guards. Police say these steps are necessary to prevent further killings. However, the move has also sparked debate within political circles.
A senior police official said multiple meetings were held after Hadi’s murder. Following instructions from the Home Ministry, the Inspector General of Police asked all units to assess threats. Reports were prepared quickly. Uniformed police have been deployed outside several leaders’ homes. At least 20 leaders are already under personal security. Authorities insist the situation is being monitored closely.
Intelligence agencies have warned that a specific group is trying to destabilize the country. The warning came after the announcement of the 13th national parliamentary elections. Agencies believe tensions are being deliberately fuelled, especially in border regions. Hadi’s murder is being linked to this broader plan. Since November 27, at least ten killings have been reported. Officials say the threat is real and ongoing.
Bangladesh Police chief Baharul Alam said a special security operation is underway. He warned that those trying to disrupt national security will face strict action. Police presence has been increased at rallies and political events. Patrols in sensitive and border areas have been intensified. The government maintains that law and order will be enforced firmly. Authorities say no compromise will be made on national security.
