California: 40,000 People Ordered To Evacuate Due To Hazardous Chemical Tank

Washington: A major alert has been issued in California, USA, regarding a hazardous chemical tank. A tank filled with toxic chemicals, located at an industrial site in the Garden Grove area of ​​Orange County, overheated; consequently, authorities ordered approximately 40,000 people to immediately evacuate the area.

What is the issue in California?

According to officials, the tank contains a chemical known as Methyl Methacrylate (MMA), which is used in the manufacturing of plastics. This chemical is considered highly flammable, toxic, and explosive. Experts warn that if the tank ruptures or leaks gas, people could suffer from severe health issues such as breathing difficulties, lung irritation, dizziness, and vomiting.

Officials from the Orange County Fire Authority stated that the temperature of the tank had been rising continuously, although it has now been lowered to some extent. According to officials, the "safe temperature" for the tank is considered to be around 50 degrees, whereas by Friday evening, its temperature was recorded at approximately 61 degrees.

What Are Two Major Threats Facing Authorities?

Fire officials have issued a clear warning that the situation remains extremely critical. They noted that attempts were made to drain the approximately 7,000 gallons of chemical contained in the tank, but this could not be accomplished due to a faulty valve. Authorities now face two major threats: either the tank could explode, or it could develop a crack, causing the toxic chemical to spill out.

Are Schools and Colleges Also Closed?

Given the gravity of the situation, a nine-square-mile area has been evacuated. Approximately 13 schools and two other educational institutions have also been closed down. However, according to officials, about 15 percent of the residents are still unwilling to leave the area.

This industrial site is located approximately five miles away from the famous Disneyland. Authorities are continuously monitoring air quality, and currently, the presence of toxic chemicals in the air has not been confirmed. Fire officials have appealed to the public not to heed rumors and to immediately move to safe locations. Officials say that if the weather or wind direction changes, the situation could become even more dangerous.
