Series of bomb blasts in Colombia (Social media)

Colombia Bomb Blasts: A horrific series of explosions shook the entire country on Tuesday night in Cali, a city located in the southwest of Colombia, and the surrounding Cauca province. Explosive devices were used near police stations in many parts of the city. So far 7 people have been confirmed dead in these attacks, including 2 police officers. 28 people are said to be seriously injured.

24 different attacks, panic spread across the country

Colombia's National Police has reported that simultaneous attacks were carried out at 24 places. Incidents like car bomb blasts, armed attacks, and grenade throwing were part of a well-planned plan. Security agencies are on alert mode from the capital, Bogotá, to Cali. There are curfew-like conditions in many areas.

Suspicion on the remaining faction of FARC, but no responsibility

Although no organization has taken formal responsibility for these attacks, the army and intelligence agencies believe that a guerrilla group called 'Estado Mayor Central' may be behind this. The group is formed by disaffected former FARC fighters who rejected a 2016 peace treaty and returned to armed conflict.

Why did the attack happen? Rebels frustrated by army's strictness

Colombia's Defense Ministry says that in recent months the army and police have caused heavy damage to the economy of rebel groups. These groups are uncomfortable and frustrated by the action on cocaine smuggling and secret arms trade, and this attack could be an expression of that frustration.

Politicians also in danger: deadly attack on presidential candidate

Just a few days before this series of blasts, presidential candidate Miguel Uribe was shot in the head during a rally in the capital, Bogota. At present he is fighting for his life in the hospital. It is not a coincidence that when the country is in election mode, attacks are taking place on both political and military fronts.

One country, two paths

Colombia today stands at a frightening turning point—on one side is the path leading to democracy and peace, and on the other side is the darkness of guerrilla violence and terror. These attacks are not just an attack on the police or the leaders, but on the self-confidence of the entire Colombian society. The next step will have to be decided jointly by the government, the army, and the public.
