Day After Zelenskyy Meet, Trump Holds Second Dialogue With Putin In 24 Hours

Washington: US President Donald Trump made a renewed attempt to play mediator in the Russia-Ukraine war as he spoke with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday. It was the second conversation between the leaders of two of the world’s most powerful nations within a 24-hour period.
  
The interaction between Trump and Putin took place a day after the US President met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Miami.

“President Trump has concluded a positive call with President Putin concerning Ukraine," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a post on social media platform X.

Trump, Putin discuss security concerns

According to media reports, the dialogue between Trump and Putin included recent security developments, including a drone attack on the Russian president’s residence, allegedly carried out by Ukraine. 

Russia media house RT News quoted Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov as saying that Trump was “shocked and outraged" over the incident. 

“Thank God we didn’t give Zelensky Tomahawk missiles," Trump reportedly told Putin during their conversation.

Ukraine has however, denied any involvement in the incident.

No agreement on territory

However, despite the positive note sounded by both parties, there is no end in sight to the war between Russia and Ukraine as of now with Trump and Putin failing to achieve any significant breakthrough on the contentious issue of territorial control.

Trump claimed that efforts to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine have entered the “final stages,” adding that a specific deadline is yet to be set.

“I think we’re very, we’re in the final stages of talking, and we’re going to see. Otherwise, it’s going to go on for a long time,” the US President said.
