New Delhi: India's defence capabilities received a massive boost on Monday with the maiden flight test of Pinaka long-range guided rocket (LRGR 120) from Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha.

"The rocket was tested for its maximum range of 120 km, demonstrating all in-flight manoeuvres as planned. The LRGR impacted on the target with textbook precision,” the defence ministry said in a statement.
"All the deployed range instruments tracked the flight throughout its trajectory," the statement added.

Named after the legendary bow of Lord Shiva, the Pinaka rocket is designed by Armament Research and Development Establishment in association with High Energy Materials Research Laboratory. The project has also received crucial support from Defence Research and Development Laboratory and Research Centre Imarat.

How was the Pinaka launch conducted?

The LRGR launch was carried out from an in-service Pinaka launcher. Monday's test demonstrated the versatility of this weapon system and established the launch capability of Pinaka variants of different ranges from the same launcher.
Congratulating DRDO on the occasion, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh asserted that the successful design and development of long-range guided rockets will boost the capabilities of the armed forces.
Also on Monday, the defence acquisition council (DAC) approved the purchase of military hardware worth ₹79,000 crore. The comprehensive shopping list includes long-range guided rocket ammunition for the army’s Pinaka multiple launch rocket system (MLRS).
