Paris: The famous Fête de la Musique festival, held annually in France, has been embroiled in controversy this year due to incidents of violence, rape, syringe attacks, and widespread chaos. Millions of people, including a large number of foreign tourists, attended this massive street music festival held across the country. However, during the festival, the situation spiraled out of control in several cities, especially the capital, Paris, forcing police to resort to large-scale action.

Did women report rape cases?

According to reports, two women have been raped during the event. Several other sexual assault cases are also being investigated. Some reports also claim that those affected may have included underage individuals, although authorities have not yet officially confirmed all the details. The investigation is ongoing.

Did syringe attack incidents spread panic?

Among the most worrying incidents during the festival were so-called needle spiking incidents. Several women complained of sudden needle pricks in crowded areas. Some victims were taken to hospitals for medical examination. One woman reportedly fainted after being pricked by a syringe in the Boulevard de la Madeleine area and was immediately hospitalised. Authorities are trying to determine whether any substance was injected into her body through the syringe.

Were there reports of clashes and stabbings in Paris?

Violence also broke out in several areas during the event. Stabbings, clashes, and fight between groups were reported. In central Paris neighborhoods like Châtelet, people faced street fights, stampedes, and massive crowds. Eyewitnesses reported that large numbers of people crowded narrow streets, making the situation worse.

According to the reports, a British tourist, described the event as extremely crowded and dangerous, stating that the sudden fights and chaos created fears of a stampede. Many people were unable to move safely through the streets.

How many people are arrested?

French authorities said a total of 243 people were arrested across the country, the vast majority in Paris. Police and security forces conducted operations throughout the night to control the situation. Thousands of police, firefighters, surveillance drones, and helicopters were deployed. Despite this, incidents of violence and chaos were reported in many places.

The incidents have sparked a political debate in France over security arrangements. Authorities have defended their preparations, but critics said that adequate security measures were not taken given the size of the crowds and prior warnings. Investigations are currently underway into all incidents of rape, syringe attacks, stabbings, and violence. Authorities have urged people to avoid rumors and remain patient until the investigations are complete. The use of narcotics or other substances in the syringe attacks will only be confirmed after forensic examination.
