New Delhi: The recent release of the film "Ramayana" has captured widespread attention. Among the many scenes in this film, one has stunned everyone: the scene in which the great bird Jatayu attempts to rescue Sita from the abduction of Ravana, the king of Lanka. This scene has once again brought Jatayu's bravery and his sacrifice to save Sita into global discussion. Few may know that the world's largest bird statue is of Jatayu.
This statue of the bird Jatayu is located in the Kollam district of Kerala. This mythological story is presented in a magnificent physical form at the Jatayu Earth Centre, a unique tourist destination perched on a rocky hill in Chadayamangalam. Let's explore the story of Jatayu and what you can explore here.
This statue in Kerala is a living tribute to the mythical bird Jatayu, believed to have fallen at this very spot after a battle with Ravana. The center's most prominent landmark is its massive Jatayu statue, created by renowned sculptor, filmmaker, and art director Rajiv Anchal.
Jatayu was a mighty bird king, traditionally described as a vulture. This character appears in the Aranya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. According to scriptures, he was a close friend of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, the father of Lord Rama. They fought and won many battles together. But Jatayu's most crucial moment came when Ravana was kidnapping Sita. Rama and Lakshmana were away. As Ravana was carrying Sita away in his flying chariot, Jatayu heard her screams. He leaped to save Sita, who was like a daughter-in-law to him.
During the battle with Ravana, Jatayu said, "It has been sixty thousand years since I was born." Despite his old age, Jatayu challenged Ravana to abandon Sita. A fierce battle ensued in the sky. According to the Ramayana, Jatayu attacked Ravana and even damaged his chariot. He fought like a warrior to save Sita.
However, Ravana eventually overpowered him and cut off his wings. Badly wounded, Jatayu fell to the ground, and Ravana succeeded in abducting Sita. However, Jatayu's sacrifice was not in vain. He survived long enough to meet Rama and Lakshmana and inform them of the direction in which Ravana had taken Sita. Jatayu then breathed his last in Rama's arms, who also performed his last rites.
The monument is approximately 200 feet long, 150 feet wide, and 70 feet high. It is known as the world's largest bird sculpture. Spread across approximately 65 acres and four hills, this project brings together mythology, eco-tourism, adventure, and leisure. The sculpture not only represents a mythical bird, but also depicts Jatayu in a wounded state, symbolizing his sacrifice while protecting Sita.
There are many experiences available for visitors. Reaching the top of the hill is via cable car or a walkway of 826 steps. The site also features a museum and a 6D theater experience, dedicated to the story of Jatayu. It is located approximately 50 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram.
You can fly to Trivandrum International Airport and then take a cab or taxi directly to Jatayu Earth Centre. Kollam Junction is approximately 37 kilometers from here. From there, go to Chadayamangalam Bus Stand, where the Earth Centre is approximately 2 kilometers away. You can also take an auto.
