Fierce fighting erupts between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters in Gaza (Social Media)
Gaza Crisis: The Gaza Strip has once again been drenched in blood. Four Israeli soldiers were killed in fresh clashes in the southern region on Thursday, while retaliatory attacks killed 85 Palestinians. Hamas fighters are reportedly among the dead. Israeli tank shelling and aerial attacks in Gaza City have exacerbated the situation.
The scene in Gaza's largest city is terrifying. Internet and telephone lines have been cut. Contact with the outside world has been severed. People living in tents on the outskirts of the city say they have neither a safe place nor food. "Bombs are exploding everywhere, bullets are flying...where do we go?" says Bassem al-Kanou, who lives with his family in a makeshift tent.
The Israeli military says its aim is to exert enough pressure on Hamas to force it to release the hostages. According to reports, Hamas holds 48 hostages, of whom approximately 20 are believed to be alive. People in Israel are taking to the streets demanding their safe release. However, the continued attacks in Gaza City have further endangered the lives of these hostages.
The conflict is raging beyond Gaza. Two Israeli soldiers were killed in an attack at the Allenby Crossing on the Jordanian border in the West Bank. The driver was also killed in the crossfire. Meanwhile, Israeli aircraft targeted Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. However, full details of the damage there are not yet available.
The situation is also deteriorating within Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the military failed to reach an agreement on the occupation of Gaza City and the airstrikes in Qatar. Israel is also facing criticism at the United Nations. A resolution in the General Assembly received the support of 142 countries, while only 10 countries, including the United States and Israel, abstained.
The number of countries recognizing Palestine is steadily increasing. Many European countries are now considering imposing restrictions and taxes on Israeli products. Jonathan Plesner, head of a Jerusalem-based think tank, says that the country's major decisions are currently in the hands of just one person—Prime Minister Netanyahu. This is why criticism of the government is intensifying.
