International News: Recently, Nepal’s youth, mainly from Gen Z, staged massive protests after the government banned social media platforms. The demonstrations became so intense that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned. Protesters also damaged some government offices, forcing authorities to lift the social media ban. Sushila Karki was then appointed as interim Prime Minister.

Why the movement started in Peru

This year, Gen Z protests have been seen in several countries. The beginning was in Indonesia, and now the youth have taken the front in Peru. On 27 September, thousands of young people in Peru’s capital Lima protested and raised slogans against President Dina Boluarte. Clashes occurred between the police and the protesters during this demonstration. The police fired tear gas and conducted a baton charge, in response to which the youth threw stones. This protest began after changes made to the pension system on 20 September. According to the new rules, every person above the age of 18 in Peru must be associated with some pension company. In addition, there has been long-standing public dissatisfaction against President Boluarte and the parliament.

So far, in which countries has Gen Z protested?

Between 31 August and 1 September this year, youth in Indonesia protested against the increased allowances for MPs. Eight people died during this protest. Following the movement, under pressure, President Prabowo halted the housing allowance decision. On 1 September, youth also protested in the Netherlands. The anger was sparked over the government’s stance on helping Israel. After the protests, the government promised to change its policy.
