Haifa Mayor said a big thing about Indian soldiers. (Jagran)
Israel: The bravery of Indian soldiers was remembered on Monday in the Israeli city of Haifa. During World War I, these soldiers, risking their lives, liberated Haifa from the Ottoman Empire. At a ceremony marking the occasion, city Mayor Yona Yahav said that children will now be taught the correct history.
Mayor Yahav explained that since childhood, he and other students were taught that Haifa was liberated by the British Army. However, historical research revealed that the actual battle was fought by Indian cavalry. He said, "We are changing our textbooks. Now every child will learn that Indian soldiers liberated Haifa."
The tribute ceremony took place at the Indian soldiers' crematorium. Haifa Day is celebrated here every year on September 23rd.On this day in 1918, the troops of Mysore, Hyderabad and Jodhpur Lancers attacked the Ottoman army and freed the city through the difficult slopes of Mount Carmel. Historians consider the valor of these soldiers fighting the sword and spear as a "last major mounted campaign".
Mayor Yahav reminded that in 2009 he promised that the story would be added to the city books. Now that promise is being fulfilled and the new generation of Haifa is knowing who the real hero was.
The Indian Army also remembers this day with great respect every year. The Indian Embassy, army officers and a large number of local people attend the event. Its purpose is to pay tribute to the soldiers who made history by sacrificing thousands of kilometers away from their country.
This initiative of Haifa is not only a tribute, but it is also an attempt to rectify the long -standing historical mistake. Now the fact will reach the coming generations that Indian soldiers played an important role in the security of not only Haifa but also in the security of the entire region.
