Tehran: It has been more than three months since the death of Iran's former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The government has now fixed the date of his funeral. Khamenei left this world on 28 February. Now three days of state mourning will be observed in his memory across the country and tribute meetings will be held at various places.
There was speculation about the date since Khamenei's departure. The government says that preparations had to be made for such a big event. It took time due to security, crowds and scheduling in different cities. Only now has the complete plan been made.
Tehran's Deputy Mayor Mohammad Amin Tavakoli-Zadeh said that Khamenei's last journey will pass through several major cities. The largest events are being held in the capital Tehran, Qom and Mashhad. Lakhs of people are expected to gather in these three cities.
The main event to be held in the capital Tehran will be the biggest. According to officials, this can continue for about 24 hours. People will keep coming day and night. It is being counted among the largest gatherings in the history of Iran.
The Municipal Corporation estimates that around 20 million people in Tehran and other cities combined may come to see Khamenei for the last time. For this, the frequency of buses and trains has been increased. Accommodation is being made in the open fields.
The biggest problem is to handle such a big crowd. There is full emphasis on ensuring that the roads are not blocked, there is no stampede and that everyone gets water and food.
With mourning throughout the country, the presence of millions of people, and simultaneous events in three major cities, it has become the largest event in Iran's recent history. For the people, this is not just the farewell of a leader. Many people are seeing this as the end of an era for the country.
