Tehran: Apprehensions regarding the continued persistence of the ongoing crisis in West Asia have intensified. On Thursday, Iran rejected a peace proposal put forward by the United States, labeling it as both unilateral and unjust. However, Tehran stated that if the US were to present a proposal grounded in ground realities, a path toward peace could still be forged.
According to reports, an Iranian official acknowledged that the U.S. ceasefire proposal had reached Tehran via Pakistan; this proposal was discussed in detail on Wednesday night by Iran's top officials and the Supreme Leader. Objecting to the U.S. proposal, the Iranian official asserted that it serves only American and Israeli interests, completely disregarding Iran's interests. He stated, "If one looks at the essence of this proposal, it is that the U.S. wants Iran to relinquish its defensive capabilities in exchange for a vague plan regarding the lifting of sanctions." The official added that the proposal lacks even the minimum prerequisites necessary for it to succeed.
Iran, currently embroiled in a conflict with the United States and Israel, affirmed that the avenue for diplomacy remains open. The official remarked, "Diplomacy has not completely ceased, and if a realistic mindset prevails in Washington, a way forward can still be found." Furthermore, he emphasized that Turkey and Pakistan are continuously engaging in mediation efforts and striving to bring an end to the conflict.
It is worth noting that earlier on Wednesday, Iranian media had also reported that officials of the Islamic regime had rejected the proposal put forth by the United States. According to these reports, Tehran had primarily laid down five conditions for ending the conflict; chief among these were demands that the U.S. and Israel immediately cease attacks on Tehran, provide compensation for damages incurred during the war, and grant Iran full control over the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, Iran demanded the lifting of all sanctions currently imposed upon it.
Trump—who had previously stunned observers by issuing a 48-hour warning to Iran followed by the announcement of a five-day ceasefire—once again issued a threat to Iran on Thursday. Writing on the social media platform X, he claimed that Iran is "begging" for a deal. Furthermore, he warned that if Iran does not get serious about this matter, it will have to face the consequences. He wrote: “Iranian officials are very different and strange. They are begging us for a deal—and they should, because they are militarily finished. There is no possibility of them making a comeback. Yet, despite this, they are publicly stating that they are merely 'considering' our proposal. They must get serious very soon, or it will be too late. For once that happens, there will be no turning back.”
