Tehran: A major explosion rocked Iran on Saturday. The blast occurred in a building in Bandar Abbas, a city on the Persian Gulf coast. At least one person was killed and 14 others were injured. The explosion comes at a time when Iran is facing the threat of a US attack. However, Iranian media has not linked the explosion to the United States. Local authorities say the cause of the blast is still unknown.

What happened in Bandar Abbas?

Iranian state television reported that the explosion occurred in an eight-story building in the Moallem Boulevard area of the city. The blast was so powerful that two floors of the building were reduced to rubble. Several cars and shops near the building were also destroyed. Local administration, fire brigade, and medical teams are on the scene carrying out rescue operations.

The state-run IRNA news agency quoted Mehrdad Hasanzadeh, Director General of Crisis Management in Hormozgan province, as saying that the cause of the explosion is being investigated. He said, "Those injured in the incident are being taken to the hospital and are receiving treatment."

Images shown on state television after the blast showed the building's exterior completely blown off. Debris from the building was scattered all around. Following the explosion, claims circulated on social media that the attack targeted a Revolutionary Guard naval commander, a claim that state media denied.

This explosion in Iran comes at a very tense time. Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran. The US has deployed its aircraft carrier group to the region. Immediately, speculation began on social media that the US and Israel were behind the attack. However, these claims could not be confirmed.

How did the blast take place?

According to local media, the explosion was caused by a gas leak. Additionally, another explosion due to a gas leak occurred in Ahvaz, a city near the Iraqi border. A total of five people were killed in the two explosions, and more than 14 were injured. Some reports have mentioned seven explosions. According to these reports, explosions occurred in Tehran, Bandar Abbas, Tabriz, Qom, Ahvaz, Natanz, and Parand. The Iranian government has not confirmed these reports.

Mohammad Amin Liyaqat, head of the Iranian fire department, said in a statement to the Iranian news agency Mehr regarding the explosion in Bandar Abbas, "According to initial investigations, it has been determined that the explosion was caused by gas. My colleagues will provide more information in the next few hours."

Several videos of the incident are being shared on social media. They show damaged cars standing in front of buildings reduced to rubble, damaged by the debris from the collapsed structures. Reuters confirmed the location by analyzing the buildings, trees, and street layout, which matched satellite and file imagery. However, the date of the video cannot be independently verified.

Following the news of the explosions in Iran, suspicion immediately fell on the United States and Israel. However, according to a CNN report, US and Israeli officials have clarified that they had no involvement in these explosions.
