22 Dead, 100 Injured as Power and Water Crisis Triggers Mass Unrest in Madagascar (X)
International News: Violent youth-led protests in Madagascar forced President Andry Rajoelina to dissolve the government. Seeing this movement, which started from the capital, Antananarivo, spread throughout the whole country, the situation deteriorated so much that 22 people died, while more than 100 people were injured.
This protest is actually a result of long-standing problems. Constant power cuts and water scarcity provoked the anger of the general public, especially the youth. Education and employment opportunities are already limited, so lack of basic facilities further increased dissatisfaction.
A large part of Madagascar's population is youth. When this class lands on the roads, it directly affects the stability of the government. The protesters expressed their displeasure over unemployment, inflation and poor standard of living. According to international agencies, Madagascar is counted among the poorest countries in the world and a large population here is living below the poverty line.
Amid the serious situation, President Andry Rajoelina, while addressing the nation on television, announced the dissolution of his government. He apologized to the public and assured that concrete steps would be taken to improve the situation. Rajoelina also said that dialogue and relief measures will be started in the country so that public dissatisfaction can be pacified.
This is not the first time in Madagascar that the political crisis has shaken the government. President Andry Rajoelina himself came into the limelight in 2009 through a change of power. Since then, there have been many power struggles and instability here many times. The current developments are considered to be the biggest challenge of his political career, especially because he became President again in 2023.
Analysts believe that the step of dissolving the government may temporarily reduce dissatisfaction, but unless there is a solution to basic problems like electricity, water, employment and education, instability may persist. If concrete changes are not made in the new cabinet and there is no initiative for reforms, then there will be a possibility of protests again.
This movement led by the youth has made it clear that the people of Madagascar will no longer be satisfied with the only promises. They need real improvement and a better standard of living. The President's decision to dissolve the government is currently a step of relief, but whether it will prove to be a long-term sustainable solution for the political and social system of the country will be decided in the coming days.
