Tehran: Angered by Israel's attacks on Lebanon, Iran halted talks with the United States on Monday. Following the termination of all indirect negotiations with the US, Iran has reportedly decided to blockade the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. If maritime traffic is halted at Bab al-Mandeb, which is located near Yemen, following a potential disruption at the Strait of Hormuz, a severe global energy crisis is virtually inevitable. This move by Iran could escalate military conflict. However, no official announcement regarding this has been made by Iran.

Iran's state-run news agency, Tasnim, citing top officials, stated that despite the ceasefire, Israeli military attacks in Lebanon and Gaza have not ceased. Consequently, Iran and the "Resistance Front" (which includes Yemen's Houthis) have taken a decision regarding Bab al-Mandeb. This decision is part of a coordinated retaliatory response to Israel's military strikes. Oil prices began to rise immediately following this report.

How Could Ships Be Halted at Bab al-Mandeb?

The Houthi rebels, who control large parts of Yemen, are allies of Iran. Acting at Iran's behest, the Houthis could target ships passing through Bab al-Mandeb and disrupt shipping operations. Bab al-Mandeb is situated between Yemen and Djibouti. Given this geographical proximity, it would not be difficult for the Houthis to intercept commercial vessels in this area.

This maritime strait, known as Bab al-Mandeb, separates the Horn of Africa from the Arabian Peninsula. Its geographical location makes it one of the world's most critical shipping lanes. This narrow passage serves as a major commercial choke point, connecting the Red Sea—leading to the Suez Canal—with the Gulf of Aden, which opens into the Indian Ocean.

Where is Bab al-Mandeb?

Bab al-Mandeb is located at the southern end of the Red Sea, situated between Yemen and Djibouti. The Bab al-Mandeb—20 miles wide and 70 miles long—exerts a profound influence on global affairs. It serves as a gateway for ships traveling between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia via the Suez Canal.

Every year, billions of tons of cargo—including crude oil and manufactured goods—pass through this narrow waterway. Should the Bab al-Mandeb cease to be operational, ships could be forced to alter their routes. Any disruption to this passage would prevent the delivery of oil and LNG to Europe, leading to a massive surge in oil and gas prices.
