Chennai: K. Annamalai, the former State President of the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a significant claim, stating that he no longer has a future within the BJP. He added that, for him, there are no longer any opportunities left within the saffron outfit. This statement comes at a time when there is speculation that he might resign from the party on Tuesday (June 2) and announce the formation of his own political party. Party officials told the media that Annamalai is expected to meet with BJP President Nitin Nabin on Monday or Tuesday, following which he may announce his departure from the party.

Amidst growing speculation regarding his dissatisfaction with the party and the possibility of him forming a new political organization, Annamalai stated on Monday that he would clarify his position within the next two days. Speaking to reporters at the Chennai airport before departing for Delhi, Annamalai—when asked about the rumors concerning the formation of a new political party—said that he would provide a response and clarify his stance within two days. While at the Chennai airport to catch his flight to Delhi, Annamalai told a group of journalists, "Please wait. We will sit down and talk in two days."

No BJP Flag on Annamalai's Car?

An interesting detail in this unfolding situation is that the car in which Annamalai arrived at the airport did not display the BJP flag. This development surfaces approximately one month after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, in which the BJP managed to win only one seat in the 234-member assembly. Sources revealed that Annamalai—a 41-year-old former IPS officer turned politician—was offered a seat in the Rajya Sabha; however, he declined the offer. A source familiar with the developments stated, "Annamalai feels that there are no opportunities or future prospects for him within the BJP."

A Change in Strategy Following Vijay's Success?

Sources close to Annamalai indicated that he believes the political landscape of Tamil Nadu has undergone a fundamental and significant transformation following the emergence of actor-turned-politician 'Thalapathy' Vijay as a major political force in the recent elections. According to a source close to Annamalai, "Today, there is no leader capable of challenging Vijay. The Dravidian era has now come to an end. Politics based solely on linguistic issues will no longer work; the political landscape of the state has undergone a transformation."

Annamalai Seeking to Avoid Conflict with BJP Leadership?

Sources indicate that Annamalai views this void as an opportunity. Concurrently, he is striving to ensure that his departure from the BJP remains "amicable" and does not result in any public confrontation with the party leadership. It is worth noting that just a year ago—prior to the onset of the election buzz in Tamil Nadu—the BJP had removed Annamalai from the post of State President.

When is Annamalai's Birthday?

Media reports suggest that, rather than immediately launching a political party, Annamalai intends to first initiate a large-scale mass movement. The objective of this movement is to unite like-minded individuals and establish a robust network of volunteers. This campaign is set to be executed on a massive scale, with plans to engage young people from diverse social and professional backgrounds. Further indications of this initiative can be seen in the fact that, ahead of Annamalai's birthday on June 4, posters bearing slogans such as "Our Leader, Come and Lead Us" have been put up across the main roads and streets of Chennai.
