New Delhi: Even as the United States turns its covetous eyes towards the resource rich region of Greenland, the world's 'sole superpower is facing the prospect of taking on a host of long-term allies - the NATO nations. With Denmark, whic rules Greenland, being a NATO member, US President Donald Trump needs to work out a strategy to deal with a bunch annoyed European allies.
In 1949, the United States, along with European countries like Britain and France, formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) to protect western interests during the Cold War. NATO was established to counter the dominance of the eastern bloc led by the Soviet Union (Russia).
NATO is considered to be the world's strongest military organization, but now it appears to have become a headache for the United States. President Donald Trump's ambition to take over Greenland appears to be in danger of remaining unfulfilled because of NATO.
It is even being speculated that the United States may face a war with the 31 NATO members before facing enemy nations like Russia and China.
US President Donald Trump has issued a 20-day ultimatum to Greenland. In a top defense meeting, Trump even threatened to use weapons to take Greenland. According to the American media, a meeting of Democratic lawmakers was held in Washington on Thursday (January 8). At this meeting, Congressman Jeffries presented a preview of McGovern's plans regarding the War Powers proposal. Jeffries stated that if the US invaded the Danish territory of Greenland, it would be considered a violation of Article 5 of the NATO Charter.
Article 5 of NATO states that any armed attack on one or more NATO member countries in Europe or North America would be considered an attack against all of them. Following this, NATO countries could freely use military and weapons to fight.
According to Jeffries, if this were to happen, NATO countries could attack the US. This would directly trigger World War III. A day earlier, most NATO member countries had warned the US about Denmark. Denmark even stated that any attack on Greenland could lead to the end of NATO.
In such a situation, the US could be forced to fight a NATO country. If Trump persists on the Greenland issue, he could be forced to fight a NATO country as early as late January.
Most of the countries in NATO are European. Britain and France, among them, possess nuclear weapons. If the US breaks away from these countries, it will be put on a significant back foot, as countries like China and Russia are already opposed to it. Both of these countries also possess nuclear weapons.
This will also be unfavorable for the US diplomatically, as it maintains its dominance in Europe and the Middle East thanks to NATO.
After World War II, the threat of a Cold War loomed over the world. At that time, the Soviet Union and the US began targeting smaller countries to expand their influence. To address this concern, European countries, together with the US, formed an organization called the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). According to its constitution, if any NATO member country is attacked, it will have to fight against all other countries. NATO currently comprises a total of 32 countries, the main ones being the US, France, Britain and Germany.
