Islamabad: A major suicide attack has taken place in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killing at least five people and injuring 10 others. Police said the attack occurred on Friday at the home of a member of a peace committee during a wedding celebration. Sajjad Ahmed Sahibzada, the police superintendent of Dera Ismail Khan district, confirmed it was a suicide attack at the residence of Noor Alam Mehsud, the head of the peace committee. Rescue officials said five bodies and 10 injured people have been shifted to the hospital.

What is the incident?

Reports indicate that guests were dancing when the attack occurred. The blast caused the roof of the room to collapse, trapping people under the rubble. This made it difficult to reach the victims and hampered rescue efforts. The rescue department said that seven ambulances, a fire engine, and a disaster response vehicle reached the scene immediately after receiving information about the incident and launched a rescue operation.

Initial reports suggest that Peace Committee leader Wahidullah Mehsud is also among the dead. Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. Police have initiated an investigation into the incident. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Sohail Afridi strongly condemned the blast and has sought a report from the Inspector General of Police. Afridi said that those responsible will not be spared.

Why has Khyber Pakhtunkhwa become a challenge for Pakistan?

Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has witnessed a significant increase in extremist violence in recent years. This region, bordering Afghanistan, has been a stronghold of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Following the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, the TTP has intensified its attacks in the area. The year 2025 proved particularly challenging for Pakistani security forces in this region, with hundreds of Pakistani security personnel killed in attacks by the TTP and its affiliated groups. Earlier this month, armed assailants killed four members of a peace committee in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Bannu district. This followed an attack in November 2025 on a peace committee office in the same district, which left seven people dead. Police said that among those killed were a "good Taliban" member and his relatives. "Good Taliban" refers to former militants who have surrendered to the authorities.
