Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a two-day visit to the Maldives. He has been invited as the chief guest on the occasion of the country's 60th Independence Day. On this special occasion, PM Modi described the India-Maldives relationship as historic and deeper than the ocean. He stated clearly that the bilateral investment agreement between the two countries will soon be finalised, and talks on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) have also begun.
This visit by PM Modi is considered very important for many reasons, especially at a time when relations between India and the Maldives had become strained in recent months. However, this visit has infused new energy into bilateral ties. He also announced major economic support for infrastructure development in line with the priorities of the people of the Maldives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Maldives will end on July 26. His schedule on Friday began at 10:45 AM, during which he met with prominent personalities of the Maldives until 12:40 PM. Following this, from 3:50 PM to 4:15 PM, he interacted with ITEC alumni and members of the Indian community living in the Maldives. At 4:30 PM, he participated in the Independence Day celebration, after which he will depart for India at 6:15 PM.
During this visit, the Indian government announced a loan of ₹4,850 crore (about 565 million US dollars) to help the Maldives. PM Modi said, "This amount will be used for infrastructure-related projects in the Maldives, which are directly connected to the needs of its people." This economic support is seen as a major step toward strengthening bilateral relations further.
Prime Minister Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu had detailed talks to improve cooperation in important areas like trade, defence, and security at sea. This meeting was especially important because after coming to power in November 2023, Muizzu had strained ties with India due to the 'India Out' campaign. However, this meeting has signalled that relations between the two nations are now returning to normal.
On this, PM Modi said, "India-Maldives friendship has always been bright and clear, no matter the circumstances." This statement is being seen as an effort to give a new direction to the relations between the two countries.
In his speech, PM Modi said that the friendship between India and the Maldives is very old and deep, like the ocean. This shows that India always values strong and close relationships with its neighbouring countries.
