Qatar: A major accident occurred on Sunday night at the Barzan Gas Supply Plant located in Ras Laffan Industrial Area of  Qatar. A fire broke out in the plant after a massive explosion. At least 54 workers have been injured in the accident, while 18 people are reported missing. After the blast, there was chaos in the entire area. Fire and disaster relief teams remained busy extinguishing the fire throughout the night and searching for missing people. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals. The administration has started investigation into the accident.

When and how did the accident happen?

According to the information, this accident happened at a time when preparations were going on to restart the work that had been stalled for a long time in the plant. Employees were busy restoring the gas supply system. Meanwhile, there was a sudden loud explosion and within a few seconds the fire engulfed a large part of the plant. The explosion was so powerful that the surrounding buildings also shook.

How is this related to the Hormuz crisis?

Recently, Qatar's gas supply was affected due to tension in the Strait of Hormuz and disruption of maritime traffic. Operation of many facilities was limited due to interruptions in energy exports. Now, when efforts were being made to normalize the situation, this major accident came to light in Barzan Plant. Officials say that some technical glitch may occur while restarting the system after the interruption.

What will be the impact on the global energy market?

Qatar is one of the world's largest natural gas exporters. The stoppage of supply from the Barzan plant has increased concerns in the international gas market. Experts believe that if the plant remains closed for a long time, the supply and prices of LNG will be affected. Many countries in Europe and Asia are dependent on Qatar's gas, so the market has already become alert.

Why has the loss not been assessed yet?

The actual damage caused by the blast and fire is yet to be assessed. Initially the officials had given information only about a few injured. The Home Ministry later confirmed that the number of injured and missing people was much higher. It is difficult to access the damaged part of the plant, so complete details will take time to emerge. The forensic team is removing the debris and investigating.

How important is the Barzan Plant?

The Barzan plant is considered the backbone of Qatar's gas export system. From here, gas is supplied to foreign countries along with domestic needs. The impact of the plant could lead to a decline in Qatar's overall production. The company has said that the safety of the remaining units is being investigated. Some units have been temporarily closed for the safety of the employees.

How long will the search for the missing workers last?

According to officials, the search for the 18 missing people will continue until the debris is completely removed. Families are being given information in the control room. The Qatar government has assured all possible help to the families of the dead and injured. Also, the details of all the employees working in the plant are being scrutinized so that no one is left missing.
