Trump
International News: On one side, US President Donald Trump keeps presenting himself as a friend of India, praising ties and showing warmth in public statements, but on the other side he is strongly urging the European Union to take a very harsh step. Trump has openly appealed that the EU should impose a 100 percent tariff on Indian goods, a move which he believes will create pressure on New Delhi to change its policies. He argues that India’s increasing closeness with Russia, especially through oil trade, cannot be ignored and must be countered with strong economic measures.
Along with India, Trump has also turned his attention towards China and repeated his appeal for a 100 percent tariff on Chinese goods as well. According to him, both India and China are gaining unfair advantages in trade, and America along with Europe should unite to punish them with restrictions. His tone makes it clear that while he speaks of friendship, he is not ready to allow India’s independent stance on issues like Russia to go unchallenged. This double-edged approach by Trump reflects his growing trade aggression and his attempt to use tariffs as a weapon of pressure in global politics.
The president made the extraordinary demand after attending a meeting between senior US and EU officials in Washington on Tuesday to discuss ways to raise the economic costs of the war for Moscow, the Financial Times reported, citing unnamed officials.
In fact, the US President is adopting every trick to put pressure on India to not buy Russian oil. First Trump imposed a 50 percent tariff on India and now he is appealing to the European Union to impose 100 percent tariff on India. Trump's statement has come at a time when just a few hours ago he had talked about taking forward the trade talks between India and America.
Let us tell you that after the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the SCO Summit, US President Trump's restlessness has increased. Trump is constantly trying to put pressure on India to not buy Russian oil, but he is not succeeding.
After Western countries imposed sanctions on Moscow and cut off its supplies following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, India began buying Russian oil sold at a discount. As a result, Russia's share in total oil imports rose from a mere 1.7 per cent in 2019-20 to 35.1 per cent in 2024-25 and it is now India's largest oil supplier.
