International News: In a move that could create uncertainty for millions of foreign nationals, including Indians, the Trump administration has announced a sweeping review of more than 55 million people holding valid US visas. The step, officials said on Thursday, is part of an ongoing effort to identify potential violations that could lead to visa cancellations and deportations. According to a report by the Associated Press, the US State Department confirmed that all categories of visa holders—ranging from tourists to students—are under “continuous investigation” to determine if they remain eligible to live, study, or work in America.
The State Department made it clear that if any ineligibility or violation is found, the person’s visa will be revoked immediately. In cases where the visa holder is already inside the United States, deportation proceedings could be initiated. This process applies not only to individuals who have overstayed their visas but also to those who may have engaged in activities deemed illegal, unsafe, or against US national security interests.
Since taking office in January, President Donald Trump has adopted a strict stance on immigration. While much attention has been on deporting undocumented immigrants, the new measures extend scrutiny to those with valid visas, such as international students, researchers, and tourists. Experts say this marks a significant expansion of the government’s enforcement strategy, making even lawful residents subject to sudden checks and potential removal.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the US had 12.8 million green card holders and around 3.6 million people on temporary visas last year. However, the scope of the current review covers over 55 million individuals, which also includes those living outside the US on multiple-entry tourist visas. Julia Gelatt, associate director at the US Immigration Policy Program, explained that the large number suggests the investigation is not limited to residents but also to those who frequently visit America.
The State Department listed several criteria that could make a visa holder ineligible to remain in the US. These include:
Officials also noted that social media accounts, foreign law enforcement records, and prior immigration history would be examined as part of the review.
Initially, the Trump administration had focused on student visas, especially those suspected of involvement in pro-Palestinian or anti-Israel protests. Over time, the review has expanded to cover nearly all visa categories, signaling a broader policy to monitor and restrict foreign nationals in the US.
The announcement has created concern among millions of immigrants, particularly from countries like India, where thousands of students, professionals, and families depend on temporary or visitor visas. Critics argue that such large-scale investigations could cause fear, discourage skilled migrants, and damage America’s reputation as a global destination for education and innovation. For now, the review process continues, and the possibility of visa cancellations or deportations remains a real concern for millions of foreign citizens across the globe.
