New Delhi: Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, witnessed devastating attacks on Sunday night as Russia unleashed a heavy barrage of drones and missiles. This assault is considered one of the largest attacks launched against Kyiv in recent weeks. Following the attack, a terrifying scene of fires, explosions, and smoke unfolded across several parts of the city.

In videos circulating widely on social media, a cruise missile can be seen striking the central part of Kyiv. A massive explosion erupts the moment the missile makes impact. The sounds of explosions reverberated across Kyiv throughout the night.

How Many Drones and Missiles Did Russia Employ?

According to Ukrainian officials, Russia utilized approximately 600 drones and 90 missiles in this attack. While Ukraine's air defense systems successfully shot down a large number of drones and missiles, several munitions managed to reach their intended targets.

According to the news agency AFP, the attack targeted several regions, including the capital city of Kyiv. A business center and a market located near Kyiv's Lukianivska metro station were completely destroyed.

Local media reports indicated that a small café—which had been rebuilt and reopened six times following previous Russian attacks—was once again destroyed in this latest assault.

What Did Ukrainian Officials Say?

Ukrainian officials confirmed that at least four people were killed in the attack, while dozens sustained injuries. Numerous residential buildings, schools, markets, and commercial structures suffered damage.

During the attack, panicked residents were seen rushing toward metro stations and underground bunkers. Air-raid sirens blared throughout the night, and power supplies were disrupted in several areas.

Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister, Andrii Sibiga, strongly condemned Russia on the social media platform X. He asserted that the attack was not aimed at any military objective, but was instead carried out with the specific intent of harming civilians. Andriy Sybiha stated that, in addition to Kyiv, attacks were also carried out against the Cherkasy, Kharkiv, Kropyvnytskyi, Odesa, Poltava, Sumy, and Zhytomyr regions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that, on this occasion, Russia also employed a powerful hypersonic ballistic missile known as the 'Oreshnik.'

What is the Oreshnik Hypersonic Missile?

The 'Oreshnik' is believed to be Russia's new hypersonic missile. It is capable of traveling at speeds approximately 10 times faster than the speed of sound. According to experts, this missile is capable of destroying bunkers situated several storeys underground.

What Did Russia's Ministry of Defense Say?

On Sunday, Russia's Ministry of Defense confirmed that it had launched attacks against Ukrainian military command centers, airbases, and facilities linked to the military-industrial complex, utilizing various missile systems—including the Oreshnik. However, Russia did not publicly disclose the specific names of these targets.

Moscow stated that this attack was carried out in retaliation for strikes launched by Ukraine against Russian-controlled territories. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine now appears to be taking an even more dangerous turn.

The use of hypersonic missiles has heightened global concerns. Experts believe that such weapons could render warfare even more destructive, as intercepting them is significantly more difficult compared to traditional missiles.
