US agricultural groups deliver BIG warning to Donald Trump. (Image X @ParallelFacts)
Washington: Agricultural leaders and organizations in the United States have issued several warnings, stating that if the current administration's policies continue, they could lead to a "massive collapse of American agriculture." A coalition of major U.S. agricultural associations and 27 former leaders of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently issued a formal letter to the U.S. Congress. The letter stated that the policies adopted by President Donald Trump's administration have caused "significant damage" to the sector.
They cited data indicating that barely half of all farms will be profitable this year. This aligns with data from the American Farm Bureau Federation, which also found that American farmers have lost more than $50 billion over the past three years. The letter stated that tariffs have been imposed on various types of agricultural inputs. From fertilizers and agricultural chemicals to machinery parts, the administration's tariffs have increased the prices of agricultural inputs and driven production costs significantly above commodity prices.
It stated that increasing the cost of agricultural inputs is taking money out of the pockets of American farmers. The letter further stated that this administration's trade policies and Congress's inaction have also harmed American farmers by reducing our global competitiveness, disrupting export markets, and lowering commodity prices.
This follows two previous warnings. The first was issued in October 2025 through a letter from more than 215 agricultural organizations, and later, on January 15 of this year, a letter from 56 agricultural groups was released. These cited trade protectionism, labor shortages, and federal employee furloughs as the main reasons for the deteriorating agricultural economy in the country. The letter to Congress in January warned that a large number of farmers are deeply in debt, farm bankruptcies are steadily increasing, and many farmers may have difficulty securing funding to plant their next crop. It stated that farmers had been experiencing "negative returns and losses of nearly a hundred billion dollars across the country" over the past three to four years. Senator John Boozman, chairman of the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee, said during a conference call that farmers are "losing money, a lot of money."
