Washington: Despite the recent tension between America and Iran, diplomatic contact between the two countries has not completely ended. Efforts for talks are going on behind the scenes and preparations are underway to organise the next round of technical-level talks in Doha, the capital of Qatar. However, the official date of the meeting has not been decided yet. There remains uncertainty regarding this talk amid different statements from both countries.
US President Donald Trump has claimed that at the request of Iran, talks will be held between representatives of the two countries in Doha on Tuesday. However, Iran has denied this claim and said that no meeting of any technical working group is scheduled this week. Despite this, contact between the two sides continues through intermediary countries.
According to Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, consultations are currently underway with Qatar on the issue of implementing the other side's commitments. Sources say that if talks take place, its main objective will be to reduce regional tension and maintain stability in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important maritime trade routes in the world. Recent security incidents and attacks on oil tankers in the region have raised global concern. In such a situation, efforts have intensified to reach an agreement between America and Iran regarding the security of this route and the movement of ships.
Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian has claimed that out of the 12 billion dollars frozen in Qatar, 6 billion dollars will be released soon. However, American officials rejected this claim and said that no amount has been released at present. Qatar has also not confirmed any such fund transfer.
After recent security incidents, Qatar has suggested that until a clear agreement is reached between the US and Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the movement of ships through this sea route should be limited. Apart from this, it has also been advised to impose a temporary ban on the operation of tourist boats, fishing boats, jet skis and some commercial vessels.
According to the White House, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and other senior officials can go to Doha to participate in high-level talks. At the same time, Foreign Ministers Marco Rubio and Steve Witkoff will inform both houses of the US Parliament about the talks with Iran and the future strategy. During this period, regional security, nuclear programmes and future diplomatic initiatives are also likely to be discussed.
