US Panel to Probe India's Strategic Role As Washington Seeks Ways To Counter China (X)
Washington: A US government panel has announced that it will examine India's developing place in global geopolitics and military issues, especially as Washington seeks ways to counter China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific.
The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission said that it will hold a public hearing of the 2026 reporting cycle next month on February 17 to examine India's relations with the US and China.
The commission plans to discuss a wide range of topics in the hearing, including the India's border tensions with China, its expanding naval presence in the Indian Ocean, and the India's expanding role as an Indo-Pacific security actor. The panel will also examine the economic and technological ties among the three countries, India, China, US, in different areas like trade, investment, and emerging tech sectors.
The panel will also examine the India's drive to build self-reliance in critical and emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and pharmaceutical supply chains, the industries viewed by Washington as central to long-term strategic competition with Beijing.
The review comes after a period of tentative easing in tensions between India and China, including high-level engagements and partial reopening of ties that had been strained since the border clashes of recent years.
The hearing also takes place just weeks before a scheduled state visit to China by US President Donald Trump in April, highlighting the Washington's delicate diplomatic balancing act between competing with Beijing and maintaining stable engagement.
The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission was set up by Congress in 2000. It was created to investigate, assess and annually report on "the national security implications of the economic relationship between the United States and the People’s Republic of China."
