The campuses across universities in the United States have been witnessing a vehement protest against Israel's unbridled aggression in Palestine. The institutes, including Columbia, Yale, Vanderbilt, the University of Pennysylvania and New York University, have become the epicentres of these demonstrations. 

Mass protests across several US univesity campuses over Israel's war with Gaza intensified on Wednesday after police cracked down on the protesters, arresting many. Now, the protest has now spread at least five universities. Mass protests led to the closure of classes, as students' anger towards university officials and law enforcement escalated. 

100 students arrested till now 

Till now, 100 students were arrested at the University of Texas's Austin campus after 100 state troopers and some locals arrived at the scene. Over 100 students put up tents and banners and signs at the centre of the University of Southern California (USC) campus. 

How protests have affected campus life? 

With escalating tensions and heightened security concerns, Columbia University has shifted to online classes.

When and Why did Columbia University protest begin? 

The protest was started April 17 when Columbia University President Nemat "Minouche" Shafik faced inquiries about on-campus anti-sentism during a hearing before the Republican-led House Committe on Education and the Workforce. 

Students across the US universities and colleges have been holding sit-ins to register their protest against not just the war in Gaza but also the US's continuous support of Israel. Students are demanding an end to US military assistance for Israel, and university divestment-withdrawl of stocks, bonds, or investment funds from arms suppliers and companies benefitting from the war. 

Netanyahu labels US student protests 'antisemitic' 

The Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday condemned pro-Palestinian protests at universities in the United States as "horrific", saying the demonstrations "have to be stopped", as he categorized students as antisemitic.

The Hamas attacks in Israel which triggered the war killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and 250 were taken as hostages.
