New Delhi: During a press conference, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, lashed out at the US Commission on International Religious Freedom's (USCIRF) latest report. The report criticizes India for alleged violations of religious freedom and recommends designating India a "country of particular concern."

"America continues to make unfounded accusations about religious freedoms," Zakharova stated, as quoted by RT News. She further deemed these accusations "disrespectful" towards India.

Russia believes US aims to disrupt Indian elections

Zakharova went on to allege that the true motive behind the USCIRF report is to disrupt India's upcoming parliamentary elections. She suggested the US seeks to "unbalance the internal political situation in India and complicate the general elections."

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has already rejected the USCIRF report, calling it "biased" and "anti-India propaganda."

Russia denies Indian involvement in alleged murder plot

Zakharova also addressed recent US claims that an Indian intelligence official plotted to assassinate Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. She dismissed these allegations, stating, "Washington has not yet provided any reliable evidence of the involvement of Indian citizens" in the plot.

Zakharova emphasized that "speculation on this topic in the absence of evidence is unacceptable."

Escalating tnsions between US and India

Russia's statements regarding US interference and India's religious freedom add another layer of complexity to the already strained relationship between the US and India. It remains to be seen how these accusations will impact the upcoming elections and broader diplomatic relations.
