New Delhi: Monsoon not only brings relief from the summer heat but also brings with it many diseases. During monsoons, the danger of fever, cough, and cold increases, along with eye flu. Eye flu is also known as conjunctivitis. Pain, redness, burning, and watery eyes are common problems faced during conjunctivitis. The increase in humidity, along with the spread of viruses and bacteria during the monsoon, can cause a sharp rise in cases of conjunctivitis.
A doctor must be consulted at the earliest if someone is suffering from any symptoms of eye flu, as it may be dangerous sometimes. It is to be noted here that conjunctivitis is a communicable disease.
Conjunctivitis, or eye flu or pink-eye, is a disease that generally occurs in the conjunctiva of the eye. It causes swelling of the conjunctiva. Conjunctiva is a thin, transparent membrane that covers the eye's white part and the inner surface of the eyelids. Pain, redness, burning, and watery eyes are common problems faced during conjunctivitis. During the monsoon, humidity and the disease-causing virus become active, which increases the risk of eye flu.
Redness in the eyes: This is one of the most common symptoms. In conjunctivitis, the white part of the eye appears red due to swelling.
Watery eyes: Due to the infection, the eyes become watery. Some people can also have sticky discharge along with watery eyes.
Itching and burning: The infected person may feel something stuck in the eye. The eyes feel a burning sensation.
Sticky discharge and swelling of the eye: In bacterial conjunctivitis, the discharge can be of yellow, white, or green colour. The eyelashes may feel sticky after sleep, along with swelling.
Problem with brightness: High brightness can cause discomfort, and the eyes may feel temporary blurriness. If any of these problems increase, then a doctor must be consulted.
In case of infection, do not touch your eyes with your hands. Avoid using the towel and handkerchief of other people. People wearing contact lenses must avoid wearing them until the infection is cured. Clean your eyes regularly to avoid eye flu. It is suggested not to come into contact with any infected person. If a person faces any pain or discomfort in their eyes, then it is suggested to visit a doctor.
