Holika Dahan 2026 Shubh Muhurat: When to Light the Fire, Timing, and Ritual Rules Explained (X)

New Delhi: Holika Dahan will be observed across India on the night of March 2. Homes and neighbourhoods are preparing for the traditional bonfire that marks the victory of good over evil. This year, however, devotees are keeping a close watch on the clock, as Bhadra timing and a lunar eclipse influence when the ritual can be performed.

When is Holika Dahan in 2026?

According to the Hindu calendar, Holika Dahan falls on Phalguna Purnima. In 2026, the full moon begins on March 2 and continues till March 3. The bonfire ritual will be held on Monday night, March 2, after sunset, once Bhadra ends.

Why does Bhadra matter for Holika Dahan?

Bhadra is considered an inauspicious period for religious rituals. Scriptures advise against performing Holika Dahan during Bhadra, as it is believed to bring negative results. Devotees are advised to light the Holika only after Bhadra is over.

What is the auspicious muhurat for Holika Dahan?

The shubh muhurat for Holika Dahan begins after Bhadra ends on March 2 and extends late into the night. Priests suggest to  perform ritual during Pradosh Kaal, after sunset, when conditions are considered most favourable.

Is there a lunar eclipse on Holi this year?

This year, Holi has become something different and attention-grabbing because a lunar eclipse is also going to occur on the same day. This rare astronomical event is falling on March 3 and is not only special in terms of astronomy, but it also has many religious and cultural meanings.

However, the eclipse begins later and does not affect Holika Dahan rituals on March 2. Since the eclipse is not visible in India, there will be no sutak period applicable for most regions.

How is Holika Dahan traditionally performed?

The ritual begins with the setting up of a pyre using wood, dried cow dung cakes, and agricultural waste. An effigy of Holika is placed on top, symbolising the burning away of evil. Devotees offer grains, coconuts, and sweets, and circumambulate the fire while praying for protection and prosperity.

Holika Dahan ashes are considered very sacred and powerful in Hinduism. Bringing these ashes home and using them correctly can help free you from evil eye, planetary afflictions, economic obstacles, and health issues. The timing and method of bringing and using the ashes are very important.

What is the religious significance of Holika Dahan ashes?

The fire of Holika Dahan burns away negative energy and obstacles into ashes. The remaining ashes are regarded as highly auspicious and protective. Scriptures like Garuda Purana call it pure ash. Applying a tilak (mark) with these ashes protects against the evil eye and obstacles. Keeping these ashes at home is believed to attract Goddess Lakshmi’s presence and maintain peace in the family. The ashes should be handled with faith and respect.

Why does Holika Dahan hold such importance?

Holika Dahan commemorates the legend of Prahlad. The fire is seen as a reminder that truth and devotion ultimately prevail. For many families, it is also a moment of reflection before the colour and joy of Holi the next day.

What is the correct way to bring the ashes?

Do not take the ashes directly in your hands. First wrap the ashes in a clean red or yellow cloth. Never place the ashes on the ground. After bringing them home, place the ashes near your puja (worship) area or safe place, preferably on a high spot.

Some people keep the ashes in small silver or copper containers. Avoid placing ashes in unclean places. When bringing the ashes, go with a family member and remember God (such as Lord Hanuman or Lord Vishnu) in your mind, that will help preserve the strength of the ashes.

What is the importance of applying tilak with ashes?

Applying tilak with Holika Dahan ashes is considered very auspicious. After bathing on the morning of Dhulendi, mix a little Ganga water with the ashes and apply it to the forehead as a tilak. All family members should apply this tilak. It is believed to protect against bad influences and negative energy. For children, a light tilak helps ward off the evil eye. Some people also sprinkle ashes lightly in the corners of the house, this helps in purifying the home environment.
