Karwa Chauth is more than a ritual it is an expression of love, care, and loyalty. The festival celebrates the deep bond between husband and wife, showing patience, faith, and dedication. Women wear colorful clothes, apply mehendi, and come together in the evening for the puja, seeking blessings from Lord Ganesha, Goddess Gauri, and Chauth Mata. The rituals not only show devotion toward their husbands but also honor the strength of womanhood. As per tradition, Goddess Parvati once observed a strict fast to unite with Lord Shiva, becoming a symbol of pure devotion. Inspired by her, even unmarried women observe the fast, hoping for a loving and loyal life partner.
Over time, Karwa Chauth has evolved beautifully. Once seen only as a women’s festival, it has now become a celebration of mutual love and respect. Many husbands also fast with their wives, symbolizing equality and shared faith. The festival reminds couples to take a pause from busy lives and appreciate their relationship. It is not just about rituals but about expressing love, gratitude, and devotion in the truest sense.
Fasting on Karwa Chauth is considered one of the most sacred traditions in Hindu culture. Women observe the nirjala vrat from sunrise to moonrise, praying for their husbands’ health and long life. Here are the main fasting rules:
1. Begin the Day with Sargi:
Before sunrise, women eat a special pre-dawn meal called Sargi, prepared by their mothers-in-law. It usually includes fruits, dry fruits, coconut water, and light sweets to help them stay energetic through the day. Once the sun rises, the fast begins and no food or water is taken until moonrise.
2. Follow the Nirjala Fast:
The nirjala vrat means fasting without both food and water all day. Women are encouraged to stay calm, avoid anger, and maintain a positive mindset while focusing on prayer and love for their spouse.
3. Evening Puja and Prayers:
In the evening, women wear traditional attire, apply mehendi, and gather for the Karwa Chauth puja. They worship Lord Ganesha, Goddess Gauri, and Chauth Mata using clay pots (karwas), diyas, and listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha (the story of the fast).
4. Breaking the Fast After Moonrise:
When the moon rises, women view it through a sieve or dupatta, offer water, and then look at their husbands through the same sieve as a symbol of love and devotion. The husband then offers his wife water or food to break the fast.
5. Eat Light After the Fast:
After breaking the fast, women should start with water and light foods such as fruits, milk, or kheer. It is best to avoid oily or spicy food immediately to prevent discomfort. Karwa Chauth 2025, with its devotion and tradition, will continue to be a celebration of love, faith, and togetherness for married couples across the world.
