Mamata Banerjee Declares Bengal Won’t Accept SIR, Calls It Backdoor NRC Attempt
National News: Mamata Banerjee openly challenged the central government on its SIR proposal, warning that Bengal will not permit it under any circumstances. She alleged the scheme is a cover to delete genuine voters from rolls. According to her, this process is nothing more than a backdoor attempt to implement NRC in the state. Speaking to her supporters, she claimed the Centre is using officials and secret meetings to threaten state employees without consulting the government.
The Chief Minister targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah, questioning how he planned to remove voters in a diverse state like Bengal. She said Bihar allowed it because of NDA’s support, but Bengal’s social fabric is entirely different. Highlighting the unity of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Dalits, Tribals and minorities in Bengal, Mamata said such tactics won’t succeed. She accused the Centre of trying to divide communities for political gain.
Banerjee labeled the SIR as a “fraudulent exercise,” stressing that it was conducted without public involvement. She claimed only selected officers were summoned to closed-door meetings where they were intimidated. She alleged that the state CEO faced several complaints and hinted at revealing proof later. According to her, this attempt bypasses democratic norms, stripping state authorities of their constitutional role and creating fear among government officials.
Mamata further accused the Centre of using SIR to cut genuine voter names from the electoral list. She questioned how Assam authorities could send notices to Bengal’s voters. Raising doubts, she asked how a central minister could claim that 1.5 crore names would be deleted even before the revision started. She said democracy relies on fairness and both ruling and opposition must protect the people’s right to vote.
Banerjee claimed SIR was nothing but NRC through the backdoor. She accused BJP leaders of secretly planning voter exclusion while presenting it as an administrative exercise. She pointed out that Home Minister himself admitted voter deletions during a party meeting, asking who gave him that right. She said democracy cannot survive if citizens are excluded, warning that such steps would backfire and expose the ruling party.
Mamata accused central agencies of working under BJP orders, politicizing everything from education to festivals. She said these agencies were intimidating officials and promoting saffronization. She also claimed there was a “Mir Jafar” in Delhi helping these moves. Banerjee warned that Bengal’s people would give a strong reply if genuine voters were erased. She predicted such plans would collapse once the truth came out.
Concluding her speech, Mamata said Bengal is different from other states and will resist any attempt to manipulate its voter list. She emphasized that the people of Bengal won’t allow their democratic rights to be stolen. If the Centre continues this path, she warned, the backlash from voters would be unprecedented. Her message was clear: Bengal will not bow to pressure, and its people will safeguard their democracy.
